Switchyard Park
Switchyard Park is the newest addition to Bloomington's athletic scene. Its first phase is complete and it now serves as a full-scale practice facility for IU soccer, softball, track & field, football, men's baseball, women's lacrosse and men's lacrosse. More than 300 people worked more than three years on the project. The park is part of both an ongoing initiative by the city of Bloomington called "Hometown Sports Initiative" that has made major improvements to other parts of Buskirk-Chumley Park including Victory Field (home of minor league baseball) and Community Stadium (IU varsity sports).
According to Stephen Crews, assistant director for facilities planning at IU Athletics: "We are excited about Switchyard Park because it provides a centrally located, multi-sport complex for our student athletes to use as a daily practice facility. We have been looking for opportunities to expand and enhance our facilities as our program has grown in recent years with the construction of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and Cook Hall, along with major renovations at Memorial Stadium."
In its first year of operation, Switchyard Park has already been host to the Indiana High School Track & Field State Championship meet as well as a number of youth athletic tournaments. More than 350 high schoolers competed on IU's campus last spring.
